WATERING & FEEDING

Water the root zone, not the timetable.

Greenhouse containers depend on the grower. Their water use changes with sunshine, temperature, leaf area, pot size, compost and crop load, so fixed daily amounts are unreliable.

Check before watering

Feel below the compost surface and lift smaller pots to judge weight. Water thoroughly when needed, then allow drainage. Do not leave unsuitable plants standing permanently in water.

Consistency matters for fruiting crops

Large swings between dry and saturated compost can contribute to fruit splitting and physiological problems. Mulches, larger containers, drip systems and shading can make moisture more stable, but every automatic system still needs checking.

Feed for the plant and growth stage

Young plants, leafy crops, fruiting plants and dormant overwintering specimens do not need the same fertiliser. Follow the fertiliser label, avoid exceeding the dose and occasionally check for salt build-up in containers.

Holiday planning

Test irrigation before leaving, including the furthest dripper. Make sure reservoirs are large enough, filters are clear and overflow cannot damage the greenhouse base or nearby property.
